I just joined Mercari and listed a few items. I sold 2 of them. I liked that I sold them so fast, but here's what I didn't like...
1) they give you only 3 days to mail your package, then you have to wait for your payment for up to 21 days while the buyer checks it out and decides they like it and leaves you good feedback.
2) They only pay you by sending your money to your bank account, which can take 7 to 10 days. I could've sworn that I read they offered Paypal, but they don't. Or, you can spend your money on site, which is what they want you to do.
So, while, yes, they are legitimate, they are much like every new site of that sort. They try to do things one way and over time, they may change some things, or not. It's not worth it for me to wait a month for the few dollars I sold my items for. I wasn't really thrilled with Mercari and I don't use it anymore.
Mercari may or may not be a legitimate service, so it's hard to speak to its safety. See this page for more information.

It is legit for me, but you are under a big pressure of time. It depends if you can accomplish that.
